Post Doc Art event 1.3.2018

Generations of Artistic Research 1.3.2018

Welcome to the post-doc gathering organised by Centre for Artistic Research (CfAR) at Uniarts Helsinki on Thursday 1.3.2018 at 15:00–19 at the Theatre Academy, Auditorium 1 (Haapaniemenkatu 6, Helsinki).

The second Post Doc Art Event will be devoted the past and the future generations of artistic research! Finland has a reputation as a pioneer country of the academic Artistic Research in Europe. But who are those “pioneers”? And what did they actually do? What is their view of the development of the field, its current state and future?

During the first half of the event, we will meet persons who have contributed significantly to the development of Artistic Research in Finland. Our panelists, Annette Arlander (Visiting Professor, Stockholm University of the Arts), Jan Kaila (Dean, Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki), Maarit Mäkelä (Associate Professor, Aalto University) and Assi Karttunen (Lecturer, Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki) provide four different viewpoints to the genealogy of AR. The panel is hosted by Esa Kirkkopelto (Head of CfAR).

After the pause, during the second half, the event continues in the form of a workshop where the participants are invited to discuss the themes gathered at the occasion of the previous Post Doc Art on 1 February 2018. The discussions take place in small groups and they will be hosted by the CfAR steering group members. The discussions are meant to provide premises for the future actions of CfAR.

The topics of group discussions are:

TEMPORARY PAVILION for Artistic Research?
What if the CfAR community would put up an artistic research pavilion in the center of the city? A temporary dwelling, construction, hut? Or a spectacular thing that can change its site, appear here now and tomorrow next to a(nother) cathedral, institution, dog park?   A three-dimensional materialisation of artistic research made visible, heard, known and felt in urban space where people come and go in their every-day life? "I am here and I am a pavilion for all issues yet unknown."
ROLE OF WORKS in Post Doc Art?
Can Post Doc art works (such as exhibitions or performances) be considered research in the same integral way as they were pre-examined and included in the thesis project? Do works of art have absolute value as research? Or are they reflected, communicated and articulated only through documentation and/or source material / case studies for the written research? Does the label of "researcher" ruin the artistic career? Is there a danger that the artist-researcher might end up categorized only as a writer with no (or marginal) artistic ambitions compared to other actively practicing colleagues in the same field?

CfAR will take the major responsibility of organizing the program of the Uniarts Research Pavilion at the occasion of the Venice Biennale in 2019. The focus of the main program will be in the postdoctoral Artistic Research. Come and hear more about the way the program will be organized, and in which ways you might be able to contribute to it. The call for presentations will open already in April!

Post Doc Art: WHAT NEXT?
The remaining two meetings this semester in April and in May will be devoted to the self-reflection of the post doc artistic research community and for creating mutual connections. Their preliminary titles “My Life as an Artist-Researcher” and “Swarming” reveal something about their contents but do not define it yet. Your vision is welcome so that we can make the events better suitable for you interests!

Those who are on the CfAR e-mail list will be sent the resume of the feed-back of the previous PDA meeting on 1 February 2018 as well the afore mentioned topics in advance.
