PAULA KRAMER : Rock / Crust / Body / Snow / Face / Buoy (2018)
25.4.2018, Tutke Spring Research Days, KIASMA Theatre
Paula Kramer used a custom software to mix live video feed with prerecorded video footage. The software was designed to be easy to use in live performance.
Mixing words, sounds, physical presence and materials on a table with pre-recorded videos of movement practice on Länsi-Mustasaari (Suomenlinna). Meeting outdoor practice in an indoor situation, testing what carries over and what emerges anew. The sailing of feather ships, the crushing of plastic rock.
Paula Kramer writes “The current version allows to experiment with material mixing in a way that is expressive of what I would refer to as intermateriality, but in a totally different way from the direct physicality of outdoor movement practice. I appreciate especially the playful and responsive quality of the tool, it is very easy to handle and allows working smoothly in the live composition of both image and sound. The set-up as a whole merges analogue and digital tactics and from my point of experience was successful in producing and receiving material resonances, which is central to my practice as a whole.”
Paula Kramer is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Artistic Research (CfAR), Uniarts Helsinki. She works on intermateriality in the context of outdoor movement practice, choreography and beyond.
