The Sibelius Summer Academy offers the chance for international students to learn about studying in Finland and invites music enthusiasts to attend concerts and open lectures.
The Sibelius Summer Academy brings together leading artists and students of the same field both from the Sibelius Academy and from around the world. The new Sibelius Summer Academy offers top-quality courses, interesting concerts and a window to the Sibelius Academy’s internationally renowned education in music. The public will get the chance to go to concerts and observe some of the classes.
– We regularly receive questions from foreign students who ask what it is like to study at the Sibelius Academy. The Sibelius Summer Academy will give them the opportunity to become acquainted with our teachers, students and the high-quality Finnish music education. As for our own students, they’ll get to be part of a new international learning environment, says Kaarlo Hildén, Dean of the Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki).
The first Sibelius Summer Academy in 2019 will offer the following three courses: Woodwinds, Organ Academy, and a course focusing on a cappella singing led by Grammy-winning ensemble Theatre of Voices. The courses will welcome esteemed teachers from abroad, including clarinettist Calogero Palermo and flautist Emily Beynon from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, organ artist Peter Krasinski, and the members of the Theatre of Voices along with the founder of the ensemble Paul Hillier.
The Summer Academy is a new initiative at Uniarts Helsinki, organised partially with support from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation and the Wihuri Foundation. The foundations fund the Sibelius Academy’s international visitor programme, which aims at developing the Sibelius Summer Academy.
– The Sibelius Summer Academy and the related international visitor programme form a key international initiative focused on the development of the Sibelius Academy’s education, and it is made possible with support from the foundations, explains Hildén.
The Summer Academy’s programme includes about 20 concerts scheduled for June and August. Most of them will take place at the Helsinki Music Centre. Besides attending concerts, the public will also have the opportunity to observe world-class music teaching first-hand, as some of the classes will be open to everyone. Nearly 200 students from Uniarts Helsinki and around the world will participate in the classes.
