Music Theory 1
This site discusses music theory in an unconventional way. In addition to harmony, the usual content of music theory studies, we have included articles on notation and rhythm. In connection with scales and functionality, we have added a brief review of jazz theory.
The aim of this site is to introduce concepts of music theory from the past to the present. In addition to material from the traditional Music Theory Level 1 course, there is more specific information about rhythm and scales along with those used in jazz. Some of the concepts may be new to those who have completed a corresponding course at another school. Our aim is to offer material for advanced music theory studies for Sibelius Academy students or others who are interested. The site will be supplemented and revised as necessary, but we have chosen to focus on building a databank and are not offering exercises at this point.
In order to be able to fully enjoy the features of this site, you will need a computer with a sound card and loudspeakers or headphones. You will also need the Flash plug-in for your browser.
The authors of this site are Aarre Joutsenvirta, lecturer in Music Theory, and Jari Perkiömäki, lecturer in Jazz at the Sibelius Academy.
