Perilous Experience? 
 - Extending Experience through Artistic Research

During the past ten years, discussions in the area of artistic research have been informed by numerous new academic trends and research areas such as post-humanism, new materialism and realism, processuality, ‘OOO’, affect theory, ‘ANT’, hybridization, cyber-culture, post-colonial and queer studies, media, science and technology studies, animal studies etc. These approaches have provided important theoretical support for artist-researchers´ attempts to relate artistic practices to the expanding ideas of reality, to its increasing otherness and strangeness.

The topic of the CARPA5 will juxtapose contemporary theorisation with more perennial questions concerning such threshold experiences and cultural practices that have framed human culture across the ages and are today typically considered pathological, paranormal, spiritual or mystic. While the arts have always been inspired and influenced by these dimensions of human existence, mainstream academic research has pushed these phenomena to the margins of reality.  Artist-researchers and art practitioners themselves have begun to initiate new experimental ways for considering these phenomena in critical discussion with the natural sciences and humanities.

CARPA5 asks: how does the research of the anomalistic, through artistic means, help us relocate experience in a world that has multiplied by extending beyond all human-centred perspectives? How do we produce experience and retrace its limits through artistic research?

CARPA5 invites artist-researchers at doctoral and post-doctoral levels to submit proposals related to the following themes: Abnormal, Anomalistic, Ascesis, BDSM, Birth, Boredom, Death, Disability, Dream, Extra-sensory, Fantasy, Healing, Hypnosis & Suggestibility, Intoxication, Magic, Mysticism, Occultism, Paranormal, Possession, Psychedelia, Psychopathology, Sensory deprivation, Trance…

Proceedings

The Perilous Experience CARPA5 Colloquium Proceedings will be published in the Performing Arts Research Centre’s multimedial publications series Nivel (nivel.teak.fi) in January 2017.
Texts to be published in the proceedings should be submitted no later than November 15, 2017 to teak.carpa@uniarts.fi.

The submitted texts should be based on the presentations given by the author(s) at the conference. The texts should adhere to the following guidelines and formats:

• Submit the text as a word document, a docx. file     
• The text should be written in English
• The writer is responsible for the language check
• The text can be anything between 1.000 to 4.000 words (maximum 10 pages) 
• The line spacing should be 1,5 and the font 12 point Times New Roman with subtitles in bold
• Use endnotes to mark references. Additionally, compile a reference list at the end of the text. In both cases follow the given annotation guide – see Tutke Structure and Annotation Guide (p. 6-19).
• Images can be included, however, please ensure that you have the copyright for the images (including the photographer and those photographed). If you want the image to be included in a specific place in the text send a model example as a pdf-file alongside the text (docx.) and images (jpg.)

CARPA5: Call for Proposals

We kindly encourage you to submit a proposal for presentation addressing one or more of the topics of CARPA5. The call for proposals is open until 2 May 2017.

The CARPA5 theme is Perilous Experience? – Extending Experience through Artistic Research

CARPA5 asks: how does research of the anomalistic through artistic means help us to relocate experience in a world that has multiplied by extending beyond all human-centred perspectives? How do we produce experience and retrace its limits through artistic research?

The colloquium approaches its topic area without specific disciplinary framings, collaboratively, and performatively, in an attempt to support the fruitful meeting of various points of view. It seeks common points of contact, resonating surfaces, and rhythmic interference between its heterogeneous but constituent parts.

Like in the previous colloquia, the focus is on artistic / pedagogical practice.

Before submitting your proposal, please see the Vision Statement above.

The proposals can include:

• Practical workshops
• Lecture-demonstrations
• Paper presentations
• Visual presentations
• Installations
• Video projections
• Other artistic research arrangements.

Please note that

• Maximum duration for paper presentations is 30 minutes including discussion.
• Maximum duration for other types of presentations is 60 minutes including discussion.
• In your proposal, please describe the format of your presentation.
• The maximum length for submitted proposals is 2500 characters (about 300 words).
• The maximum length of the bio is 500 characters.
• A refined version of the proposal is required after acceptance.

The call for proposals is open until 2 May 2017, 23:59 (Helsinki time).

• Applicants will be informed of their acceptance by 24 May 2017.
• Presenters are asked to confirm their participation by 1 June 2017.
• The final abstracts need to submitted by 18 June 2017.
• Registration for the CARPA5 colloquium is open 20 June – 20 August 2017 (23:59 Helsinki time)

About the available venues

The venues available are a black box theatre space and an open foyer with natural light. You may also propose an outdoor presentation. The foyer is a large public space at the entrance of the building.

Please let us know in advance the equipment you need, even if it is just a video projector for your computer. This way are able to provide you with necessary technical equipment and help. Please keep in mind that we cannot provide resources for large, full-blown performances. Please, also note that there are limitations of using any stuff, liquids or materials that can damage the floors and the walls.

We will take into account the type of presentation you have proposed and allocate the limited venues accordingly, but if you have specific needs please let us know.
